Topic: SSMS to Administer Express - Licence Question
Assuming I have 5 per server licences for SQL 2005 Standard Edition servers
and I had and 50 clients with SQL CALs I believe I can install SQL Server
Management Studio on any of these 50 client PCs to administer any of the 5
SQL 2005 Standard Edition servers.
If I then install SQL Server 2005 Express on a new server am I legally
allowed to administer this new server with SSMS?
Thanks in advance
Brendon

Re: SSMS to Administer Express - Licence Question
Hello Brendon,
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is a free of charge version of SQL Server
2005.
So yes, you can administer this instance of SQL Server using SQL Server
Management Studio or SQL Server Management Studio Express legally.
There is no a limitation of administering SQL Server instances using
SSMS\SSMSE. However, SSMS should be installed on a computer that has a valid
SQL Server license.

Re: SSMS to Administer Express - Licence Question
We were talking about this matter with Tibor under another thread here.
This is really is not certainly clear in MS documents either. They say "you
need a valid SQL Server license to run SQL Server tools" but they don't
mention what a valid license is.
I know the Server tools product manager of Microsoft Turkey and I'll ask
this question to her now (by email) and then let you know her answer as soon
as I get a reply from her.

Re: SSMS to Administer Express - Licence Question
Hi Ekrem
Thanks for your reply although its still not completely clear to me.
"However, SSMS should be installed on a computer that has a valid SQL Server
license" .
I have SSMS installed on my Windows XP computer which is *not* licensed for
SQL Server 2005. However, the computer has a SQL 2005 CAL assigned to it
which as I understand it makes the installation of SSMS legal.

Re: SSMS to Administer Express - Licence Question
Brendon,
The general understanding is that a SQL 2005 CAL is 'a valid SQL Server
license' for a user, although not (obviously) to create another server.
Otherwise, no user could have SQL Server Management Studio on their desktop
unless they had also bought (at least) SQL Server Developer Edition for each
user. And that is certainly not the case.
FWIW,
RLF
